At a house sale this past weekend we found an incredible Victorian crazy quilt c. 1881. Among the intricate embroidery and numerous embellishments was my favorite piece - this sweetly embroidered scene of a young girl and her dog. The quilt also has a gorgeous flag medallion, medallions of President Garfield and his vice-president, Chester Arthur and other photos that I am still trying to identify. Other embellishments abound, such as an intricate spider web embroidered, Japanese motifs - including fans on each of the four corners.
I am still doing research, but was told that the quilt was made by the French wife of Capt. Calvin Blazier, of Baden, PA, famous for the supposedly haunted Calvin Blazier House! I purchased the quilt from a descendant of Capt. Blazier.
