Victorian Crazy Quilt Embroidered Panel - Girl with Dog

At a house sale this past weekend we found an incredible Victorian crazy quilt c. 1881. Among the intricate embroidery and numerous embellishments was my favorite piece - this sweetly embroidered scene of a young girl and her dog. The quilt also has a gorgeous flag medallion, medallions of President Garfield and his vice-president, Chester Arthur and other photos that I am still trying to identify. Other embellishments abound, such as an intricate spider web embroidered, Japanese motifs - including fans on each of the four corners.
I am still doing research, but was told that the quilt was made by the French wife of Capt. Calvin Blazier, of Baden, PA, famous for the supposedly haunted Calvin Blazier House! I purchased the quilt from a descendant of Capt. Blazier.

Weimaraner with Rhinestone Collar Pin

Wonderful vintage brooch or pin in the shape of a sleek Weimaraner. The pin is a large 2-1/3" x 2", and is goldtone metal with a rhinestone "collar", with four clear rhinestones that sparkle in the sun. The dog is in outline form, which gives it a light and airy, modern look and feel.
The piece is unmarked as to maker or metal content.

A great site to visit for dog jewelry is the Dog Jewelry Museum. The curator, Deb, accepts jewelry donations if you have any you'd like to donate to the Museum! Another invaluable site for information on costume jewelry is Illusion Jewels.

Ron Hevener Chalkware Pug Sculpture

This is a limited edition figurine or sculpture by Lancaster, Pennsylvania artist Ron Hevener. The very cute fawn colored pug is in a sitting position, with a very serious look on his face. He also has a broken and repaired front paw, but even injured dogs are welcome in the Dog Pound Museum!
The figurine is approximately 4-1/2" tall x 4-1/4" long x 3". The pug is fawn (light brown) in color, with dark face & ears and tips of his paws. The underside is marked "#355" and the side is marked: (c) 1983 Hevener

Although Hevener studios offer other styles of pugs (as well as many gorgeous dog prints and sculptures), this particular style is retired.

Pekinese Salt and Pepper Shakers

Beautiful midcentury salt and pepper shakers from Japan! The ceramic shaker is in two pieces - the top piece is the salt shaker; it is shaped like a Pekinese dog. The bottom piece is the pepper shaker, and it is a "cushion" or bed for the Peke. The shakers are stamped "Japan" on the base. We have many salt and pepper sets in the Dog Pound Museum, but this is probably the most unusual.

For more information on collecting salt and pepper shakers, a nice site is the Salt and Pepper Club, which is a nonprofit organization, or there are many wonderful books available.

Original Pen and Ink Drawing of Poodle

An original pen and ink drawing by an unknown artist. This whimsical drawing is of a poodle strutting past a gathering of admirers. It is signed "LES" in the lower right hand corner. The great thing about this particular piece (besides that it is gorgeous!) is that the reverse shows the artist's practice drawings. I love this one!

Artesania Rinconada Dalmation Puppy Figurine

This cute little Dalmation puppy figurine is by Artesania Rinconada of Montevideo, Uruguay. He is smaller than most Artesania Rinconada figurines - he might be part of the Rincababy line - and is only 2" tall by 1-1/2" wide.

Artesania Rinconada ceramic figurines are recognizable by their combination of matte pottery with glossy fired details. In this dog's case, he has a glossy black nose and tan or light brown eyes. Be careful, though - there are many imitators. Artesania Rinconada pieces are marked with an "AR" carved on the underside.

Artesania Rinconada was started by Jesus and Javier Carbajales in the early 1970s. The company is now led by Jorge De Rosa Thompson.

Hi and Welcome to the Museum!

The Dog Pound is our collection of dog figurines, artwork and collectibles. We are dog lovers (and really lovers of all animals). We also frequent garage and estate sales on the weekends and almost every week find a new dog collectible. We'd like to share our collection with you, and hope you enjoy them.

I'd love to hear about your own dog collections, too.

I'm new to blogging, so please be patient with me, and I'll try to learn quickly!
