Poodle Figurine from Austria

Wonderful vintage ceramic figurine from Austria!

This large white poodle figurine is approximately 7-1/4" tall x 8" long x 3-1/2". It is ceramic with a glossy finish - white with gray shading, black eyes and nose and pink tongue. The "fur" is nicely detailed, as are the paws.

The piece is marked "Made in Austria" on one foot, with a U-shaped mark on another foot. If anyone knows what the mark stands for, please tell me - I'd love to know!

  1. I don't know much about ceramics, but I recently purchased the same dog in gray; I will see if he has a U mark when he arrives in the mail. Mine has an E&R Imports sticker and a homemade tag indicating it was given to somebody as a gift in 1979. From what I've found online, Ebeling & Ruess of Austria imported, but did not manufacture, gift items from 1886 into the 1990's. They commissioned their things from other companies. The manufacturer "Erphila," which sold a lot of dog figurines, stands for "Ebeling & Ruess, Philadelphia."

Another gray poodle was also listed that the seller thought might have been made by Wien Keramos [Vienna Ceramics, basically]. I can't confirm that, though. However, if E&R was selling them, they were probably either Austrian or German. E&R also seems to have commissioned Goebel pieces.
